'Rusty' is the word that most students of Arabic will use to describe their language skills when they haven't practiced in months.
Well, those past, and new!, Arabic speakers are in luck! There is an affordable opportunity to learn or brush up on the Arabic language right in your backyard.
The new Summer Arabic Institute is up and running, and ready for students to enroll. The institute has been instated by Ann Arbor resident and entrepreneur Heather Laird-Jackson. It is a different type of Arabic language school in that it is open to a wide range of ages (5-adulthood) and to those who are non-Muslim.
The Summer Arabic Institute will run over a period of six weeks within the summer months. Extensive information about core curriculum and typical class activities can be found on the Summerarabicinstitute.com website.
Though the exact location has not yet been revealed, the institute will be in the Metro Detroit Area. Again, all ages and levels are welcome, and religious background is irrelevant. All can benefit from the illustrious list of board of Advisors offered at the school (see website).
Here is what the institute will offer to students in the program in the near future, inshaAllah:
Our institute is one of a kind. The program runs Monday through Friday for 2-4 hours per day depending on age and level of study. We employ the best of Arabic instructors and foster a rich learning environment.
Students 12 and older get to experience the program as live-in boarders [this aspect will start in the year 2011 inshaAllah]. Those students boarding get to explore Michigan, a state known for the number of people who speak Arabic. The weekend trips are planned to enrich the students learning experience.
Students continue their study throughout the year with once a week maintenance sessions in-person and on-line.
After the first year of study older students, ages 12-18,have the opportunity to spend the following summer abroad using their earned Arabic and learning more about Arab culture.
There is something for the whole family at the Summer Arabic Institute. We also offer a class for the parents of the student to aid in the students learning and adult classes. The Parent class is a how-to for parents to support and help the learning of their child's Arabic experience.
