The Write A House (WAH) nonprofit organization was founded in 2013 to encourage residency and the arts in Detroit, Michigan. WAH purchases vacant Detroit homes and renovates them with the help of vocational training programs. These homes are then awarded to low to moderate income writers with no strings attached, assuming the writer plans to use the home as a primary residence.
Write A House is a twist on the "Writer's Residency." In this case, the writer is simply given the house, forever.
In 2014, WAH awarded the first home to poet-historian Casey Rocheteau, to much success and fanfare. Rocheteau lives in what was called the Peach House during renovation stages and in an area referred to as Banglatown due to its high percentage of Bangladeshis.
Just recently WriteAHouse has announced the second round of applications to find new writers for the residency program beginning on April 27. Below is a message from the Write A House search committee to any interested party.
If you are interested in applying, please note that there is a $15 early-bird application fee for the first two weeks, rising to $25 afterwards. We have expanded our application criteria to accept both American citizens and permanent residents. Submissions will be accepted between April 27 and June 5.
