The Michigan Muslim Community Council (MMCC) and Jewish Community Relations Council of Detroit came together Monday to repair and beautify some worn down facilities in one of Detroit’s public schools, Nolan Elementary and Middle School.
Over 1500 community members from both Jewish and Muslim communities responded to Detroit's Fix My School petition. In the featured Huffington Post video the Communications Director of the MMCC is depicted saying, "Detroit public schools will run out of money in April," as being the impetus for their aid. Throughout the video people are shown painting over graffiti, relocating books, folding clothing, cleaning surfaces, and creating inspirational artwork among other activities.
At the end of the video one of Nolan Elementary school teachers wearing hijab, the Islamic headdress and attire Muslim women wear, sits with her class and asks why they are in school to which they reply in unison, "To get to college!".
