The internet is alive. And it doesn't look like it can be contained any longer.
Muslims are especially, and finally, realizing the reach of the internet and using it to Islam's advantage. The Islamic Online University (IOU) is just one example of that.
IOU is considered to be the "Brain child" of Doctor Bilal Philips, a beloved scholar and speaker in the Muslim world. Additionally, the homepage of the website tells visitors: "The IOU is now launching the world’s first tuition-free, online Bachelor of Arts in Islamic Studies. This path-breaking initiative plans to utilize the worldwide presence of the Internet and advanced open source online learning technology to bring low-cost, university level Islamic education within reach of anyone on the planet who has access to a computer and the Internet ."
The university has been around for quite awhile (2001) though it was restarted and relaunched from Qatar in 2007. At the present moment, any person wanting to learn Islamic Studies, can register at IOU for the Spring or Fall semester, for free!
It would seem that IOU may be the answer to the question, "How do I learn about Islam in a reliable way if I can't afford to travel or attend pricey classes?"
Curriculum and class information can be found on the website in detail, in addition to the requirements and process for applying.
The city of Ann Arbor has been extremely fortunate in receiving the number of Islamic scholars that have made it to the area for a visit. The IOU is offering free information and knowledge without the travel and without the wait. So, while there is a lap in between Islamic seminars, take solace in knowing there is a reputable online Islamic university to rely on.
