June 1st: Less than two hours ago Egypt decided to temporarily lift its barrier preventing access to the Gaza strip. Reports confirm that, in a compassionate move, President Hosni Mubarak issued an edict that will enable the border crossing to be opened to the city of Rafah for at least a few days.
What is being referred to as terrorism, abuse of power, and an all around "debacle" yesterday -that is, the IDF attack of the humanitarian aid ship in international waters- has obviously stirred the heartstrings of several political leaders. Egyptian officials are saying that this action they are taking is in order to "alleviate the suffering of our Palestinian brothers after the Israeli attack" of Mavi Marmara.
The average citizen is not to be left out of this conversation either with protests being scheduled all around the globe. It would seem that Turkey and America are leading with the most passion and visibility at the present moment.
