It would appear the "Mipsterz" and "Hijabonista" trends are not wearing down in pop culture and perhaps we have fashionable Muslim women to credit. The very popular BuzzFeed -- a global media company and viral website -- recently featured an article entitled 23 Seriously Beautiful Hijab Styles To Try which has already garnered four pages of responses since its publishing Saturday morning.
Can we just stop for a moment to acknowledge BuzzFeed used the Arabic term hijab, referring to modest attire, generally including a head covering, flawlessly in their title?
Alright to acceptance and openness in 2015!
The article features 23 images of covered Western Muslim women in various style of dress and color and include their individualistic fashion tips for the readers' benefit. In many cases, the featured model is a hijabi blogger or sells Islamic fashion boutique merchandise online. One photo displays HauteHijab founder and Michigan native, Melanie Elturk, wearing a polka dot poof skirt and solid Victorian-esque blouse. Elturk says of the outfit, "to prevent you from looking like print explosion: 1) Wear something solid to break up the prints; 2) Keep the prints in the same plane; and 3) Keep the colors in the same family.”
Another woman featured, and identified by the Instagram handle ButtonedUpMayhem, says of her style and dark hijab color choice:
The black color around my face make certain features stand out more and lacks the chaos and distractions certain printed scarves would add,” Khan says. “Hijab is an integral part of my confidence. When I wear the hijab, I’m reminded that I have enough confidence to be able to express my values and incorporate them into my appearance despite all pressure from society.
Most of the comments beneath the BuzzFeed feature are positive and the top three of the Your Reaction rankings are also favorable.
So is fashion and style acting as a soothing balm for the current religious-political atmosphere? At least there are scores of women dressing as if they believe it.
