Ever notice how discussion involving the niqab and hijab often leave out the very women who wear them? People are quick to judge and look down on those who cover because, much of the time, they don't know how happy an accomplished niqabis and hijabis are.
Who's fault is that?
It would seem it is somewhat of a shared problem; people aren't looking and inquiring and people aren't sharing and educating. I mean how many Ann Arborites have voluntarily stopped to discuss their head-covering with a non-Muslim, excluding UM-MSArepresentatives?
Fortunately, the latter group is really beginning to demonstrate what it means to cover or, or more importantly, what it does not mean. A project called Picturing Power & Potential: A Project of Economica aims to share "works by artists across the globe celebrating women as economic participants and agents of change" and a decent number of Muslim women who cover their hair and/or faces are included. Woot, woot!

ABOUT ECONOMICA
In this unique historical moment, a growing number of women are entering the workforce, creating income as microentrepreneurs, running large companies, moving millions of dollars as angel investors and philanthropists, and generating policies and theories as economists and advocates. They are also losing their homes, struggling to keep up with rising food prices, migrating to find jobs, working in exploitive conditions, and fighting for land, property and inheritance rights.
How are the globalized economy and current financial crisis affecting women’s lives? Amid all the debates and discussions about the worldwide economic meltdown of 2009, where are the voices and experiences of women?
Economica, I.M.O.W.’s online, interactive, multimedia exhibition explores the many facets of women’s contributions to the global economy.
