Here's a fine audition and casting call for Muslim women in the Metro Detroit area.
Teacher, performer, children's author, and playwright Bayyinah Muhammad is looking for a variety of Muslim sisters to act in her famed Unveiled stage play.
In the director's own words: "Unveiled is a multi-media, dramatic performance designed to affirm aspects of our lives as Muslims in America through humorous monologues, poetry and profound ensemble pieces that reflect our perspectives on current issues and our unique experiences."
Essentially, it is like The Vagina Monologues of the Muslim world.
Sister Bayyinah debuted Unveiled for the first time on September 11th, 2005 at Eastern Michigan University. When the play ended that night she, along with the original cast members, received a standing ovation from the diverse (non/muslim, non/student) crowd.
Currently Sister Bayyinah is seeking actresses from diverse backgrounds to reflect the tapestry of cultures and age groups (including sisters from India/Pakistan, the Middle East and Africa) of the American Muslim population.
She is hoping to get the cast members sorted out and rehearsed for the weekend of June 18-20 as that is when the ISSA 2010 Conference will be held in Detroit. Basically, Unveiled is scheduled to be featured there, for the benefit of hundreds of people, and so could you!
Rehearsals begin May through performance date. Times will be more solidly worked out when the cast is chosen.
Friday April 23rd, 2 PM. – 6 PM or
Saturday April 24th 1 PM - 6 PM.
