Central Academy, a Muslim owned and operated charter school in Ann Arbor, has just claimed first prize in the annual Math Facts Challenge.
Monday's Math Facts Challenge was held at Eastern Michigan University for competing charter schools in the district, of which Ali Attar nabbed the first place spot. The competition has students face off head-to-head to see who can correctly solve grade level-appropriate math problems most quickly.
Attar, who is in eighth grade, is quoted as saying,
I was a little nervous because I was being projected to the whole entire ballroom and everyone's eyes were on me and I didn't want to make any mistakes and embarrass myself. I felt really happy and I felt like I accomplished something great. I felt like I contributed greatly, and that made me feel good.
Math has always been 13-year-old Attar's favorite subject, but this was the first time Central Academy had teams compete in the annual competition, which drew nearly 500 students in first through eighth grades from 19 charter schools across southeast Michigan.
In addition to the team award, Central middle school students also won three first-place medals and two second-place medals. Bridge Academy East, of Hamtramck, won the elementary school team award.
Central Academy of Ann Arbor serves grades Kindergarten to 12th and currently enrolls 571 students. It is located on 2459 South Industrial Highway Ann Arbor, MI 48104.
