The first Michigan Muslimah award was presented at Eastern Michigan University's Azizah Magazine event last Tuesday. Mother and Ypsilanti resident sister Lujane Bashi took home the honor.
Bashi is most known for organizing cooking circles for women who have recently had a baby in the Ypsi-Arbor area. She also consistently provides rides to those without cars, schedules Islamic learning sessions, and homeschools her young son.
The event where the sister received the award also showcased Tayyibah Taylor, the editor of the most popular Muslim women's magazine, Azizah.
For the evening Sister Tayyibah gave a wonderful speech and guests enjoyed a catered dinner in EMUs new Student Center.
The event should be the first of many since it inspires those who want to do good. It is also motivating to see successful women, like those behind Azizah magazine, talk about how they do what they do.
As we wait for the Muslimah Awards to spread to all other states, in the meantime, we can simply be Good-doers.
